Following Up The Interview

After every interview it is important to evaluate your performance. This is the only way you will learn from you experiences and improve on you performance. Consider the following questions:

• What positive impressions did I make? Negative? Why did I make these impressions?
• Was there anything I wanted to say but didn't?
• What questions would I have like to ask, but didn't?
• What questions would I have answered different? How would I have changed my answers?
• How do I feel about the interview?

If you are informed following an interview that you did not get the position, it is a great idea to contact one of the interviewers to see where you could have performed better. To get a candid answer, it is important that you don't make the interviewer defensive by starting out with "Can you tell me why I didn't get the job?" A better approach would be "Would you have a couple of minutes to suggest which areas could use some strengthening?"
